The Certificate Awarding Ceremony of the Advanced Certificate in Environmental Law- 2022
The Award Ceremony of the Advanced Certificate of Environmental Law (ACEL) 2022 programme, yet another landmark initiative introduced by the Department of Public and International Law of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo was successfully held at the Faculty of Law on 18th January 2023. The ceremony was graced by the by three distinguished personnel, Prof. (Dr.) Sampath Punchihewa, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. (Chair) Wasantha Senevirathne, Head of the Department of Public and International Law, and Prof (Dr.). Kokila Konasinghe, Co-ordinator of the ACEL Programme.
In delivering the welcome speech Head of the Department of Public and International Law, Prof. Seneviratne recognized ACEL as a significant contribution by the Department in promoting public and international laws in Sri Lanka. The Dean, Prof. Punchihewa expressed his valuable insights on the importance of this course by appreciating the Department of Public and International Law for conducting this unique course for the second consecutive year. He further emphasized that disseminating knowledge on environmental law is a public duty vested upon the Faculty of Law, the premier seat of legal education in Sri Lanka. Prof. Konasinghe, the key architect behind the introduction and development of the ACEL, highlighted the importance of educating public officers, researches and citizens to face future environmental challenges and to uphold rights of nature.
The highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of certificates to the participants who successfully completed the course. Mr. Isuru Liyanage, the Director of the ACEL delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the Department.
The ACEL programme introduced by the Department of Public and International Law of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo focuses on vibrant dimensions of environmental law and policy. This programme has been specifically designed to provide students with knowledge regarding the concepts, principles, and legal authorities of Environmental Law and enhance their skills in solving complex environmental problems whilst stimulating a positive attitudinal change towards the promotion and dissemination of environmental legal knowledge in the country.
