The ‘Law Goes Green-2018’ (LGG) initiative was conceived with the aspiration of making the Faculty of Law a more environmentally friendly institute of academic excellence. Following advocacy by the Environmental Law students as part of the LGG initiative, the Faculty administration unanimously decided to bring into effect from 26th February 2018 onwards, a Zero-Plastic Assignment Submission Policy.
According to this new policy, all take-home assignments submitted to the Faculty of Law Exam Unit must simply be stapled or taped together, without the use of any plastic binding/plastic sheets/polythene or other similar non-biodegradable material and the submission of assignments with such prohibited material is precluded. This is a step towards a greener tomorrow as this policy will reduce plastic waste created by roughly 10,000 take-home assignments processed by the Faculty per academic year. The LGG initiative hopes to continue on this progressive journey of reducing environmental damage by striving to introduce an online assignment submission system to curb the use of paper at a future date.

The Green Drama Competition is a platform which allows Law students to sharpen their creative skills and portray current and pressing environmental-social issues through the medium of drama. At this competition which is to be held on 14th May 2018 from 12 pm onwards at the NLT building, three best drama from the three media; Sinhala, Tamil and English will be selected. The dramas will be rewarded for the nuanced way in which they capture the essence of various effects of environment-related issues on the contemporary society. This competition will be open to students of all four years.

A tree planting campaign will be held at the Faculty of Law premises on Wednesday, 16th May 2018 under the aegis of Ms.Otara Gunewardene, Founder of Embark and Otara Foundation. Vice-Chancellor, University of Colombo, Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake will grace the occasion as the guest of honour. Under the tagline ‘Robarosiya; It’s Blooming Again’, the Tree Planting Campaign will focus on replanting ‘Robarosiya’ (and a variety of other plants like Esala, Weralu and Magul Karanda donated by the undergraduates themselves) in the Faculty of Law premises, with the view of preserving the legacy of the beloved and age-old ‘Robarosiya’ tree which was heart-wrenchingly uprooted in the recent hurricane. This will be followed by a cleaning up of the Faculty premises. The event will take place from 8.30 am to 12 noon.

The Tree Planting Campaign will be followed by the Final Awarding Ceremony of Law Goes Green on the afternoon of the same day, from 2.00-5.00 pm at the New Arts Theater, University of Colombo, with the participation of the Vice-Chancellor Prof.Lakshaman Dissanayake. The winners of the Inter-school Case study, Debate, Drama and Poetry competitions will be awarded at this event as an encouragement to the students of the law and future lawyers to always remember to go back to nature, treat mother nature with love and respect and use resources sustainably for the benefit of generations yet unborn.
