DIPLOMA IN MEDICAL LAW AND ETHICS

The Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics (DipMLE) is designed to:

1. Provide Specialized Knowledge – Equip participants with a strong foundation in the legal and ethical principles governing healthcare practice, research, and policy in Sri Lanka and globally.

2. Develop Critical Skills – Enhance analytical and problem-solving abilities to address complex medico-legal issues, such as patient rights, consent, malpractice, and emerging technologies in medicine.

3. Promote Ethical Decision-Making – Foster an understanding of ethical dilemmas in healthcare and cultivate frameworks for responsible decision-making in clinical, legal, and policy contexts.

4. Bridge Law and Medicine – Facilitate interdisciplinary learning for legal and healthcare professionals to improve collaboration, compliance, and patient-centered care.

5. Encourage Research & Advocacy – Support scholarly inquiry into contemporary challenges in medical law and ethics, empowering graduates to contribute to legal reforms and public awareness.

By completing this programme, graduates will be well-positioned to navigate the evolving landscape of medical law and ethics with confidence and expertise.

To be eligible for the Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics (DipMLE), applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

Academic Qualifications:

1. Three (3) passes in the G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) examination or an equivalent qualification.

2. Six (6) passes in the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) examination plus at least two (2) years of relevant work experience in law, healthcare, or a related field.

3. Completion of a foundation course equivalent to SLQF Level 2.

4. NVQF Level 4 certification with five (5) years of work experience in a relevant field or accredited prior learning, followed by a minimum 30-credit programme approved by the Faculty of Law.

Additional Requirements:

• Proficiency in English (both written and spoken).

• Successful performance in an interview/viva voce conducted by the Department of Private and Comparative Law.

• Applicants qualifying under SLQF Level 2 or NVQF Level 4 may be required to pass an additional admission test.

2. Bank Deposit (People’s Bank)

   • Visit any People’s Bank branch (do not use Cash Deposit Machines).

   • Account Name: University of Colombo – Main Collection Account

   • Account Number: 310017500007 (Thimbirigasyaya Branch)

   • Mention this as a bill payment if the system rejects the account number.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

• Apply online via law.keplercloud.com

• Upload scanned copies of:

  • Application fee payment receipt

  • Academic/professional qualifications

  • NIC (front & back) or passport

  • Work experience certificates (if applicable)

Important Notes:

• Deadline: 25th May 2025 (Late applications not accepted).

• Bank charges (1%) apply for online payments—include this in your total payment.

• Do NOT use CDM (Cash Deposit Machines) for payments.

• Keep payment confirmation for future reference.
