Programme Objectives
The Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics (DipMLE) is designed to:

Provide Specialized Knowledge – Equip participants with a strong foundation in the legal and ethical principles governing healthcare practice, research, and policy in Sri Lanka and globally.

Develop Critical Skills – Enhance analytical and problem-solving abilities to address complex medico-legal issues, such as patient rights, consent, malpractice, and emerging technologies in medicine.

Promote Ethical Decision-Making – Foster an understanding of ethical dilemmas in healthcare and cultivate frameworks for responsible decision-making in clinical, legal, and policy contexts.

Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics (DipMLE), applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
Academic Qualifications:

Three (3) passes in the G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) examination or an equivalent qualification.

Six (6) passes in the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) examination plus at least two (2) years of relevant work experience in law, healthcare, or a related field.

Completion of a foundation course equivalent to SLQF Level 2.

NVQF Level 4 certification with five (5) years of work experience in a relevant field or accredited prior learning, followed by a minimum 30-credit programme approved by the Faculty of Law.
Additional Requirements:

Proficiency in English (both written and spoken).

Successful performance in an interview/viva voce conducted by the Department of Private and Comparative Law.

Applicants qualifying under SLQF Level 2 or NVQF Level 4 may be required to pass an additional admission test.
