Advanced Certificate in ICT Law

The Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, is pleased to announce the launch of the Advanced Certificate Course in ICT Law—a focused and practical qualification designed for those interested in the intersection of law and information and communication technologies.

This three-month programme, conducted online in English, introduces participants to key legal concepts surrounding ICT, including cybercrime, electronic contracts, digital evidence, internet governance, and data protection. No prior legal background is required, making the course accessible to professionals, entrepreneurs, and students from diverse academic and career backgrounds.

Delivered by a panel of experienced internal and external experts in commercial and IT law, the course takes place on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants will gain valuable insights into current legal and regulatory issues shaping the digital world and their impact on both local and global business and governance.

Programme Objectives

Through this course, the Faculty aims to equip students with:

  • Provide participants with a foundational understanding of legal principles governing information and communication technologies.

  • Examine current laws and regulations in Sri Lanka related to ICT, including cybercrime, electronic transactions, and digital evidence.

  • Introduce global perspectives on ICT law, including best practices and comparative frameworks.

  • Develop the ability to analyze and interpret legal challenges in the digital environment.

  • Equip participants with practical skills to apply ICT legal knowledge in real-world scenarios, including case analysis and drafting of basic legal documents.

  • Foster awareness of ethical and regulatory responsibilities in the use and governance of digital technologies.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the Advanced Certificate Course in ICT Law – 2025, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualifications: A minimum of six (06) credit passes at one and the same sitting in the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) examination, including a credit pass in English.

  • Prior Legal Knowledge: Not required. The course is designed for individuals from both legal and non-legal backgrounds who are interested in the intersection of law and technology.

How to Apply

Application forms for the Advanced Certificate in ICT Law can be downloaded from the Faculty of Law website at www.law.cmb.ac.lk.

Applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of LKR 1,500/-. This payment should be made at any branch of People’s Bank to the credit of the “Main Collection Account of the University of Colombo” Account Number: 310017000002)

Once the payment is made, applicants must submit the following documents:

  • The duly filled application form

  • A duplicate of the bank payment slip

  • A copy of the applicant’s National Identity Card

  • Certified copies of relevant certificates
