Welcome to the Department of Public and International Law
The Department of Public and International Law of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo,established in 2009, proudly marks over 15 years of distinguished service and contribution to the development of the legal sphere at institutional, national, and international levels.
The Department offers a diverse range of academic programmes in public law such as Criminal Law, Administrative Law, Constitutional Law and, in international laws including Environmental Law and Policy, Human Rights Law, Humanitarian Law and Public International Law. Among some of the novel areas of legal education that the Department stepped into are Law and Literature, Air and Space Law, International Institutions Law and Media Law. The involvement of the Department is highlighted in a wider spectrum of programmes according standards specified by the Sri Lanka Quality Framework by the University Grants Commission in Sri Lanka spanning from Advanced Certificate and Diploma programmes, LL.B. to Postgraduate, research-based and course-based LL.M. programmes, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy Research Degree Programmes. Committed to academic excellence, the Department actively promotes high – quality legal research and has earned notable recognition for its contributions within the international ac demic community.
The Department leads in the student-centered activities in the field of legal education with the annual environmental law day, over 13 consecutive times of “Law Goes Green” programmes, the annual Address to the Jury Contest and the Public International Law Day programme.Many of these projects focus on community engagement and soft skills development of the student community of the Faculty of Law.
The Department also takes pride in the invaluable service rendered by its academic staff in national policy-making and consultative processes, including contributions to the Constitutional Council of Sri Lanka, Public Service Commission, National Law Commission,National Higher Education Reform Committee, National Energy Policy Reform Committee, Dispute Resolution and Regulatory Affairs Sub Committees of the Colombo Stock Exchange, International Society of Criminology, National Reconciliation Committee, National Environment and Climate Change Reform Committees, National Muslim Law Reform Committee and other significant national initiatives.
