Law of the Sea Competition

The team representing Faculty of Law, University of Colombo emerged winners at the 2nd edition of the Crisis Control International Competition on Law of the Sea. The competition was organised by Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, India in association with Faculdade de Direito da Universidade De Lisboa, Lisbon-Portugal in 2023. The team comprised of Sayuni Masakorala (captain), Maleesha Perera and Janani De Silva who were felicitated for their achievement on 02nd January 2024 by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo Professor (Dr.) N. S.  Punchihewa.

The competition was centred around the theme ‘Law of the Sea’ and the team representing University of Colombo competed against many able teams in securing the win. The teams were required to participate in learning sessions conducted by two luminaries in this field, Professor Fernando Loureiro Bastos and Dr. Abdullah Al Arif on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and maritime law. Subsequently, the teams were given a moot proposition surrounding topical issues and were expected to submit coherent arguments advancing their side. Based on their performance in the rounds the team was adjudged the winners of the competition. The team received assistance from Professor Naazima Kamardeen, Senior treasurer of the Moot Court and Debating Society of the University.
