EVALUATION REPORTS AND OUTCOMES
As per the By-Laws, after consideration of the report of the examiners of a candidate for a Higher Degree, the Board of Examiners shall report to the Senate whether in its view
- the degree for which the candidate has submitted himself for examination shall be awarded, or
- the degree for which the candidate has submitted himself for examination shall be awarded subject to such minor amendments or amendments to the thesis as may be specified, or
- in the case of a candidate who has submitted a thesis for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall be awarded, or
- the degree shall not be awarded, but the candidate shall be permitted to resubmit his thesis within a specific period, or
- the degree shall not be awarded and the candidate shall either not be allowed to present himself again or shall be required to re-sit the whole or part of the examination, or
- The candidate shall be required to attend a repeat viva voce examination
AWARDS
Master of Philosophy Degree Award
As per the By-Laws, a candidate may be admitted to the Degree of Master of Philosophy if the candidate;
- Has been a registered postgraduate candidate of the programme leading to the Degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Colombo
- Has thereafter pursued in the University an approved programme of research of at least two years duration, provided that the minimum period stipulated shall not apply to teachers in the Faculty of Law
- Has paid such registration, tuition, supervision, examination and other fees as are prescribed by the Council; provided that a teacher in the Faculty of Law shall not be required to pay the registration and supervision fee and
- Has fulfilled the following conditions:

- That he has presented a thesis acceptable to the examiners embodying research on the subject selected by him and approved by the Senate and
- That he has satisfied the examiners at the viva vocexamination.
Doctor of Philosophy Degree Award
As per the By-Laws, a candidate may be admitted to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy if the candidate
- Has been a registered postgraduate candidate of the programme leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Colombo
- Has thereafter pursued in the University an approved programme of research of at least three years duration, provided that the minimum period stipulated shall not apply to teachers in the Faculty of Law
- Has paid such registration, tuition, supervision, examination and other fees as are prescribed by the Council provided that a teacher in the Faculty of Law shall not be required to pay the registration and supervision fee and
- Has fulfilled the following conditions

- That he has satisfied the examiners at the viva voce examination.
GRADUATE PROSPECTS
Upon the successful completion of the MPhil/ PhD program, graduates will be equipped to embark on a diverse array of career paths. They will have the opportunity to assume academic positions, engage in teaching and research, or further their scholarly pursuits through post-doctoral research endeavors. Beyond academia, doctorate holders will find avenues to contribute to the legal profession by practising as advocates or serving as judges. Additionally, they may choose to leverage their expertise as legal advisors, offering counsel to Government Ministries and Departments, Non-governmental Organizations, or Private Companies. This expansive skill set opens doors to a broad spectrum of professional opportunities, reflecting doctoral education’s multifaceted impact and applicability in law.
