ELIGIBLE CRITERIA


MPhil Programme

As per the By-Laws governing higher degree programs, no person shall beregistered for the programme leading to the Degree of Master of Philosophy unlesssuch person

1. Has obtained with First or Second Class Honours, The Degree of Bachelorof Laws of this University or any other recognized University or
2. Has obtained the Degree of Master of Laws of this University or any otherrecognized University

PhD Programme

As per the By-Laws governing higher degree programs, no person shall be registered for the programme leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy unless such person

1. Has obtained the Degree of Master of Philosophy (in Laws) of this University or any other recognized University or
2. Has been registered for a programme leading to the Degree of Master of Philosophy in this University and his/her request to transfer to this programme has been recommended by the Supervisor and approved by the Senate or
3. Has obtained a ‘B’ grade in the written papers of the coursework and the extended essay of the examination leading to the Degree of Master in Laws of this University; or
4. Has obtained a First or Second Class Honours, the Degree of Bachelor of Laws of the University of Colombo or any other recognised University, and the Senate has approved the direct registration to this course.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE


As per the By-Laws governing higher degree programmes, admission to the higher degree programme is granted based on authority approval and prescribed examination satisfaction, and admissions are subject to compliance with university By-Laws and other relevant regulations.

  1. Applicants for Higher Degrees in the Faculty of Law must respond to a university notice and submit an application to the Registrar.
  2. The application should include details about the proposed study and qualifications.
  3. The Registrar forwards applications to the Dean of the Faculty of Law for review and recommendations.
  4. The Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Law assesses applications and recommends them to the Senate through the Faculty Board.
  5. Accepted applicants must register as postgraduate candidates and pay the required fees prescribed by the University Council.
  6. The minimum registration period for a a Master of Philosophy is two years and Doctor of Philosophy is three years. Faculty Board, based on Higher Degrees Committee recommendations, may extend the period for valid reasons.
  7. The effective registration date for the Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy are upon Senate approval of the application.

COURSE FEE


The fee structure for admission for the 2023/2024 is as follows:

  1.  Local candidates: Local candidates applying for regular admission to the program will be required to pay a total of Rs 925,000 for PhD programme and Rs. 725,000 for the MPhil programme, which includes both the application and examination fees.
  2. Foreign candidates: For foreign candidates seeking admission, the total fee is USD 5,000 for the PhD programme and USD 4,000 for the MPhil programme, which covers both the application and examination expenses.
  3. Course fee for PhD by Publication: The fee for PhD by Publication is Rs 750,000, which includes both the application and examination fees.
